The basic research topic is the study of neutron stars and their environments.
Scientifically, neutron stars provide a basic component of research on compact
endpoints of stellar evolution, with crucial links to central problems of astronomy. For physics, neutron stars are of interest because they offer the largest quantities (solar masses!) of the most extreme condensed matter under (albeit indirectly) observable conditions. The behaviour of matter at the supra-nuclear densities inside the neutron stars is of interest for fundamental physics. Neutron stars contain bulk quantities of matter at high density and close to zero absolute temperature (in comparison to physical energy scales). This extreme condensed phase makes neutron stars an interesting subject for condensed matter physics also. In particular, problems associated with the determination of masses and radii of neutron stars, with all the connections and implications to other theoretical and observational problems, provide an important focus for our ToK project.
